Fernando Coelho (Salvador BA 1939)
Fernando Coelho is a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, illustrator and advertising professional. He became interested in the graphic arts at an early age and worked professionally in advertising. In 1961, he won first prize in a poster competition held by the Bahia State Government. He held his first solo exhibition in 1964 at Galeria Querino, in Salvador. In 1997, together with other artists, he illustrated the book Castro Alves: Edição Comemorativa dos 150 anos de Antônio de Castro Alves [Castro Alves: Commemorative Edition for the 150th Anniversary of Antônio de Castro Alves], published by the Fundação Banco do Brasil and Odebrecht.
Critiques
"Fernando Coelho is a figurative painter, a resourceful draftsman and a sensitive colorist. His subject matter has ranged from the urban scenes and landscapes of his early career to the series of tightrope walkers - so evocative of Miró - and, very recently, to flower paintings. A certain mannerism can be perceived in his pictorial practice, and some concession to the easy and the consumable in his formal repertoire".
