Biography

Ernesto Neto (Rio de Janeiro RJ 1964)

Ernesto Neto is a multimedia artist. In the 1980s, he studied sculpture with Jaime Sampaio and João Carlos Goldberg at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV/Parque Lage). He also took courses in urban intervention and sculpture with Cleber Machado and Roberto Moriconi at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ). His production lies between sculpture and installation. Early in his career, his path was marked by the works of José Resende and Tunga, in exploring the formal and symbolic articulation of different materials. He later came to use mainly polyamide stockings and other more flexible, everyday materials. In the second half of the 1990s, he produced sculptures using tubes of fine, translucent mesh filled with spices of various colors and aromas, such as saffron or ground cloves. The sculptures allude to the human body, both in the fabric that recalls skin and in the sinuous forms that occupy the space. In the late 1990s, he began to create his "naves", structures of transparent, flexible fabric that the public can enter.

Critical Commentary

Ernesto Neto's works lie between sculpture and installation. Early in his career, his path was marked by the works of José Resende (1945) and Tunga (1952), in exploring the formal and symbolic articulation of different materials. In the work A-B-A (chapa-corda-chapa) [A-B-A (plate-rope-plate)], from 1987, he explores the tension established between rectangular iron plates joined by a nylon rope. He opts for simple constructive procedures, which involve the articulation of these materials also in relation to the surrounding environment.

In the installation Copulônia (1989), he places small lead balls inside polyamide stockings, which hang from the ceiling or lie on the floor. He thus explores the weight of the metal, the plasticity provided by the small balls and the apparent fragility of the fabric. The use of polyamide stockings marks the artist's gradual abandonment of more rigid constructive elements and his search for more flexible, everyday materials.

In the second half of the 1990s, Ernesto Neto began making sculptures using tubes of fine, translucent mesh filled with spices of various colors and aromas: saffron, annatto, cumin, ground black pepper or ground cloves. In some works, the piles of spices lie on the floor while the ends of the fabric tubes are tied to the ceiling, creating the verticality of the sculptures as well as an interaction with the exhibition space. The sculptures allude to the human body, in the fabric that resembles skin and in the sinuous forms established in space. The titles of the works reiterate the artist's intention to place the human body at the center of his work: O Céu É a Anatomia do Meu Corpo [The Sky Is the Anatomy of My Body] or Acontece na Fricção dos Corpos [It Happens in the Friction of Bodies] (both from 1998).

In the late 1990s, Ernesto Neto began to create structures of transparent, flexible fabric that the public can enter. Some of these sculptures are called "naves". In the opinion of the art critic Moacir dos Anjos, the naves show the inspiration of works by Hélio Oiticica (1937 - 1980) and Lygia Clark (1920 - 1988).

Ernesto Neto also produces another group of works revealing a desire to capture the human body inside the sculptures, as with Humanóides [Humanoids] (2001), in which the viewer wears the sculpture, conveying a sense of comfort and coziness. In works shown between 2002 and 2003, he uses basically light and fabric. He creates lycra surfaces inside which the viewer can walk, immersed in fields of color. The fabric ceases to be a container for pigments and becomes, simultaneously, matter and color.

In his works, the artist creates spaces of exchange that ask the viewer to go beyond a merely visual experience, sharpening the senses. The body prevails as the axis of his proposal. He constantly uses forms that touch in space, suggesting sensuality and physical union, present in much of his production.

Critiques

"The mass of lead, centered on the elastic surface of lycra or silk, deforms it, tensing the fabric and expanding the static force toward the edges. The intensity of the gravitational force is diluted as it is distributed across a field held in the air by nylon or cotton threads attached to copper tubes and/or iron bars. Each constituent element plays an indispensable role in keeping the whole cohesive, whether through its power to induce or undergo changes, or through its capacity to create resistance or channel tensile energy. From the alteration of the surface, the event takes place: through the tensioned threads, a constant flow of vital energy is unleashed in centripetal and centrifugal directions.
Tension, force, resistance and balance are the results of intuitive calculations that the artist makes possible in his physical struggle with the material. Structuring the work requires precise movements, as there is always the risk of an imminent catastrophe. Any abrupt or miscalculated gesture, any unconsidered change, upsets the vector forces and the work may collapse. Without the tension, the event would not take place.
The tension taken to the limit, the fragility and dynamics of the structures are confirmed when the work is touched. There is then a physical-structural understanding of the work, in which form is a consequence of functional needs and the materials meet requirements of weight, elasticity and resistance.
From the range of available materials, Ernesto Neto chooses white lycra and silk and polyamide stockings - light, transparent materials that contrast with compact metal bars and plates and solid lead balls of various diameters. To this unusual combination of materials of different natures is added an estrangement that sharpens the viewer's senses: tensed to the extreme, the once delicate weaves of the fabrics become rigid and taut; in turn, the iron plates tilted at different angles, the dense metal bars hovering in the air with their weight apparently canceled, and the altered surfaces floating far from the ground create an illusion of lightness, defying the laws of gravity. Perplexed, the viewer encounters an event that intervenes in the order of things and explores possibilities of knowing the world, poetically subverting rigorous principles of physics".

BARROS, Regina Teixeira de. Ernesto Neto. Galeria: revista de arte, São Paulo, n. 31, p. 47, 1992.

"Some questions have been constant since the beginning of Ernesto Neto's career: problems of weight and the resistance of materials, elastic bodies that hold up under pressure, organisms treated as a permanent flow of transformation. In the late 1980s, Neto produced the series of 'silk stocking bags' filled with small lead balls, which introduced sensuality into the work in a more marked way.
Handleable, erotic and fluid, these male/female objects extended into space in mobile and random states, like active bodies stretching their 'skin'. At the time, the artist spoke of these objects as a way of feeling his 'own skin' in the work, as if, by reproducing and multiplying, they were an extension of himself - 'pieces of me that proliferate'.
Now the artist has been choosing to declare his presence within the work openly. Lead or plaster casts, reproducing the artist's head or hands, have been bringing these 'pieces of me' into the very structure of the work. The idea is to make visible the traces of the subject in the construction of its object; to affirm the presence of the hands and mind that made it, like Rodin's fingers on bronze, imprinting and declaring the process of sculpting".
