Darcy Penteado (São Roque SP 1926 - Idem 1987)
Darcy Penteado was a painter, illustrator, draftsman, set designer, costume designer, designer, printmaker and short-story writer. In 1948, he joined the Grupo Novíssimos in São Paulo. The following year, he held his first solo exhibition, also in São Paulo. In the 1950s, he won first prize in the poster competition for the 1st São Paulo International Biennial, received the Gold Record award for best album cover designer and won several awards as a costume designer: he was named best Brazilian costume designer at the 2nd Theater Visual Arts Exhibition at the São Paulo International Biennial, and also received the State Governor's Prize, the Saci Award from the Associação Paulista de Críticos Teatrais and other honors for his costumes for the play Pedreira das Almas.
In 1962, he was named illustrator of the year by the Câmara Brasileira do Livro for his illustrations for Cantos da Cabra Cega, by Marcel Aymé. He also illustrated O País do Carnaval [The Country of Carnival], by Jorge Amado, and Infância [Childhood], by Graciliano Ramos. As a short-story writer, he received an honorable mention from Status magazine in 1977.
