Bob Wolfenson (1954)
Brazilian photographer.
Since he began his professional career, at the age of sixteen, at the studio of Editora Abril, Bob Wolfenson from São Paulo has worked with the main genres photographic. And he did it successfully, both in his studio and on trips around Brazil and around the world – having breakfast in the empty lounge of the Hotel Glória in Caxambu or asking for the Copacabana Palace Room Service. One of the national references such as portraitist, nude and fashion photographer, Wolfenson transits between advertising and art. It has works in the collections of the São Paulo Museum of Art (Pirelli-Masp Collection), the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, the Museum of Brazilian Art of FAAP, of the Itaú Cultural, among other collections. Photography at Editora Abril where he stayed for four years. In 1978, he set up his first studio and studied social sciences. In 1982 he moved to New York, worked as an assistant for American photographer Bill King. Back in Brazil, his career took a new direction and, from 1985 onwards, he began to make editorials for several magazines. Chronology
1954 - Born in São Paulo. 1966-67 - The first photos.
1970 - Joins as an apprentice intern at the photographic studio of Editora Abril at the time directed by photographer Francisco Albuquerque and remains there for 4 years.
1973 - He enters the Faculty of Social Sciences at USP.
1974 - leaves the publishing house Abril, and begins a solo career as a free-lancer photographer for the publisher's own magazines.
1982 - Travels to New York and works as an assistant for photographer Bill King.
1985 - Starts working for the main Brazilian magazines.
1989 - Makes the first solo exhibition “Minhas Amigas do Peito” at Galeria Fotótico. Collector's, of this collection, two photos are acquired by MASP to integrate its collection.
1991 - Pirelli acquires and exposes three of its photos that become part of the Pirelli Collection of Photography. Gráfica number 30, publishes a 16-page article about his works.
1995 - Wins the FUNARTE - Ministry of Culture for Best Photographer of the Year in the Art Applied Art category by the Griffe Viva Vida campaign held in Israel. Vogue magazine publishes a special edition about his works.
1996 - holds the exhibition “Jardim da Luz” at MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo) and launches a book of the same name, co-edited by Cia das Letras and DBA Books and Arts. The magazine Photo French publishes 4 pages about it within a special issue about Brazil.
1997 - receives the Phytoervas Fashion Awards as the best fashion photographer of the year. 1998 - Nominated again for the Phytoervas Fashion Awards.
1999 - Invited by the Marlboro Adventure Team to photograph under its competition in Mexico and the United States (Utah).
2000 - É again nominated for the award for best fashion photographer of the year by ABIT. The work for Marlboro Adventure Team results in a book together, with photographer J.R. Duran edited by Bookmark. Co-edits and launches the magazine of Image, Fashion, Behavior and Photography 55.
2002 - Associated with the Gráfica Litokromia and the designers Hélio Rosas and Roberto Cipolla, launches the magazine S/NO, which follows the extinct 55. He holds an exhibition “Moda no Brasil by Brasileiros” at the Bienal pavilion within the scope of São Paulo Fashion Week.2003 – Launch of the book “Moda no Brasil by Brasileiros” in partnership with Paulo Borges, edited by Cosac&Amp;naify. Edits and photographs fully the voyeur number of the magazine Homem Vogue.
2004 - Wins the first prize of the Conrado Wessel Foundation, awarded exclusively to advertising photographers for the best advertising photograph of the year 2003 (Grendene campaign with the model Gisele Bundchen). Launches the box/book of photography containing the series “Antifachada” and “Golden Enpadração”, by Cosac&Amp;naify and holds the respective exhibition, at the FAAP Brazilian Art Museum in São Paulo.
2005- in partnership with the Photographer Fernando Laszlo is curated by the exhibition of the Brazilian photographer, based in New York, Otto Stupakoff, at the São Paulo Fashion Week space.
2006 - Photographs for the tenth edition of São Paulo Fashion Week, the calendar of the 25 most important models that were part of the history of the event, including tops Gisele Bündchen, Isabeli Fontana and Raquel Zimmermann. Wolfenson”, retrospective about his fashion photographs, at FAAP – Ribeirão Preto and FAAP – São José dos Campos Exhibition of 15 large-scale images, “A Caminho do Mar”, about industrial landscapes evocative of childhood, at the André Millan Gallery - São Paulo.
2008 - Wins the award for best fashion photographer and best advertising photographer, awarded by the event, the best of photography in Brazil, which brings together only curators, photographers and researchers in the area.
2009 - writes and launches the book “Letters to a Young People photographer” about experiences of his trajectory and professional life. They have acquired three of their images from the series “A Caminho do Mar” by the Pirelli Collection - MASP. It launches the box-book-portfolio, “Cinepolis”, under the curatorship and artistic direction of the photographer and international curator Pierre Devin, edited by the Schoeler Editions. He holds the exhibition “Cinepolis” at the Museum of Modern Art in Bahia. For the second time, he wins the award for best fashion photographer at the event “The Best of Photography in Brazil”, which brings together only curators, photographers and researchers in the area. 2011 – Holds the exhibition “Cinepolis” at the Gavea Gallery in Rio de Janeiro. He is one of the members of the exhibition “Bom Retiro e Luz: a script, 1976 – 2011” curated by Diógenes Moura held at the Centro de Cultura Judaica in São Paulo.
2013 – He holds the exhibition “Belvedere” at the Millan Gallery in São Paulo. It launches the book “Belvedere” edited by Cosc&naify. Participates in SP Arte Foto by Galeria Milan with “Belvedere”. Participates in the exhibition “Bom Retiro e Luz – Uma Roteiro” at Sesc Bom Retiro curated by Diógenes Moura.
