Alexandre Nóbrega (Recife PE 1961)
Painter.
Alexandre Nóbrega Veras started the course in the History of Art at the Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE, in Recife, but not concludes it. He is director of MAC/PE, in Olinda from 1994 to 1998. He maintains his Atêlie in the Casa Forte neighborhood, in Recife. From September to December 1995, he is a fellow at the Fine Arts Department at the University of Aix-en-Provence in France.
Critical Commentary
In 2002, Alexandre Nóbrega holds a series From paintings on paper, using acrylic paint on all of them, but also, in some, charcoal, dermatographic pencils, crayon, oil in stick and synthetic enamel. None of the paintings has a particular title - nor the series itself - but the characteristics that link one work to another and give identity to the set are promptly recognized by the spectator. These characteristics, by the way, are equally present in a large part of the artist's trajectory, and can also be used to think about the production before 2002: the relegated palette, almost monochromatic; the gestuality contained; The exploration of the black and white contrast and the sculptural suggestion of the invoice.
A recurring procedure in the work of Nóbrega is the division of the surface of the paper into well-defined and separate forms that occasionally touch each other, but always communicate. These shapes can be separated and placed side by side, or contain each other, giving the impression of being in front of a process of subdivision that was suddenly paralyzed. In this way, the observer's gaze is demanded as an intermediary between the parts, functioning as the factor that starts the game of exchanges between one form and another.
Criticism
"(...) pictorial, with the gesture, with the color, with the elaboration of an organic architecture, the result is ambiguous. In the process of construction and deconstruction of forms, elements appear that, in some way, refer the observer to a figurative imaginary. (...)"
