Zorávia Bettiol (Porto Alegre RS 1935)
Zorávia Bettiol is a record company, upholsterer, jewelry designer, designer and painter. He graduated in Painting from the Institute of Fine Arts of Porto Alegre. Between 1956 and 1957, he attended drawing and woodcut classes in the studio of the sculptor Vasco Prado (1914–1998), with whom he was married for 28 years. Dedicating himself mainly to tapestry and engraving, he developed three-dimensional shapes in tapestry and integrated elements of popular culture — such as the recurring representation of the orixás — to the erudite craft in their woodcuts.
Received the first Drawing Award at the 18th Municipal Hall of Fine Arts in Belo Horizonte, in 1962; the first engraving award at the 2nd Brazilian Religious Art Salon in Londrina, in 1966; and the National Engraving Award at the 1st National Biennial of Plastic Arts of Salvador, also in 1966, among other recognitions. In 1968, he moved to Warsaw, Poland, where he carried out studies in the textile area at Atelier Maria Laskiewicz and attended the Warsaw School of Fine Arts.
In the 1970s, Back in Brazil, he participated in several international exhibitions. In 1985, he received the Porto Alegre City Medal Award, in recognition of the services rendered to the community, and, in 1987, he was honored with the 87 Highlighted Arts Trophy. During the 1980s and 1990s, he taught several courses and workshops in various countries.
Criticism
"As an artist, Zorávia Bettiol refuses to stand in front of a mirror and aim, repeat herself, copy herself, in terms of drawing, color and theme of her own. engravings (...) differ from each other without ceasing to retain the mark of those who imagined and executed them (...) This whole word, however, says nothing of the artisanal skill of this consummate artist that is Zorávia Bettiol, nor of her rich imagination and of the its profound humanity".
