Biography

Otto Stupakoff (São Paulo SP 1935 - idem 2009)

Otto Stupakoff was a photographer. He studied photography at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles (United States) between 1953 and 1955, a period in which he also worked as a correspondent for the magazine Manchete. After returning to Brazil, he set up a studio in Rio de Janeiro, devoting himself to advertising and fashion photography. In 1957, he moved to São Paulo, where, in 1963, he joined the Realismo Mágico [Magic Realism] art movement led by the painter Wesley Duke Lee. He emigrated to the United States in 1965, settling in New York, where he quickly built a solid professional reputation, becoming a contributor to prestigious fashion magazines and major advertising agencies.

Between 1973 and 1977, he lived in Paris, France. In 1977, he returned to Rio de Janeiro, where he remained until 1981, when he moved back to New York for good; he lived in the city and became an American citizen in 1986. He published the books Otto Stupakoff: Fotografias [Otto Stupakoff: Photographs] (1978), Art to Wear (USA, 1986) and The Colors of Fashion (USA, 1994).
