Biography

Cleber Gouvêa (Uberlândia MG 1942 - Brasília DF 2000)

Cleber Gouvêa was a painter, engraver, sculptor and teacher. In 1954, he studied mural with Geraldo Queiroz and, in 1957, met the sculptor Franz Weissmann and his work. The following year, he perfected himself in painting with Alberto da Veiga Guignard and studied ceramics, lithography and engraving. He worked as a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts of Goiânia in 1962 and, from 1979, at the Institute of Arts of the Federal University of Goiás. Gouvêa does not result only from a sensory emotion, so it acts and communicates as if it were a magical work, encompassing optical and paraoptic vision; it is not restricted to the dimension and contour of shapes and the rhythmic harmony of colors because it extends to Sensations, anguish and depressions, which lends physical and psychic versatility to his compositions. For this reason, Cleber Gouvêa is perhaps the only painter who explores a theme based on cosmogony, in the insofar as it reaches the mystery of all beings in formation, given its tendency towards agitating organic forms that are transfigured into the depths of their inner universe. (...) They cause dramatic effects, especially when the symbols lose their connotations with the real and turn calligraphically into structures coated with a rare force of expression. Cleber Gouvêa is, of course, the man and the artist who lives, day by day, in the alchemical conquest of form, texture and color (...)".

"Cleber Gouvêa has been performing an abstractionist result painting, through a constant research of textures and of shapes. These forms, however, are not always detached from a figurative representation, since they can establish different connotations. Often, for example, it starts from associations of mineral or vegetable shapes, making close-ups of small details that resemble inner pieces of stones or leaves, whose texture and color are taken to the canvas. In fact, the artist claims that his painting is influenced by his daily life. After doing a study on geology, he developed a series of paintings that could be compared to fossilized crustaceans, cut and embedded in stone. In the same way it can be seen, more recently, in the series of wings, where it starts exactly from the texture, shape and color of the dragonfly's wing. These suggestions, however, are just motivations from where the artist starts for his painting (...). At the same time as it takes care of the forms, Cleber lends them meticulous textures elaboration (...)".
