Ivald Granato (Campos RJ 1949 - São Paulo 2016)
Ivald Granato was a painter, engraver, draftsman and multimedia artist. In 1966, he studied painting with Robert Newman and subsequently attended the School of Fine Arts for a brief period. From the 1970s onwards, it began to perform performances and interventions, using photography and video as a way of documenting them. In 1979 and 1982, he received the award for best draftsman of the year by the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA). In the early 1980s, he participated in events with the band Performática, by the artist José Roberto Aguilar, who included painting, music, theater and circus. He held the exhibition Ivald Granato: Drawings 1964-2000 at the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA), in Rio de Janeiro, in 2002, and at the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture (Mube), in São Paulo, in 2003. His production features frequent autobiographical references.
Criticism
"Ivald Granato is a 'full-time' avant-garde, who does not isolate the facts of the art from vital facts, continuously increasing the speeds of living and make art. Pluralist, does not feel committed to styles, trends or supports. He says: 'I know the basic techniques and purposes of painting. I can make expressionist canvases, Fauvistas, impressionists or in any more recent trend. I transformed my painting into an ironic act about what I know. Painting, for me, is not applying a known technique, but exercising the act of creating. Granato paints and draws a lot. in daylight. Granato, like Picasso, is a kind of painting gymnast: this and his daily life are just one dance, which he choreographed over the days. Everything that passes or is nearby can enter the painting, the son, the toy, the dog, himself, in a bow tie, as well as in his performances he appears dressed as Warhol, Duchamp, Nixon, Neuzinha Brizola, Picabia”.

"In Granato's recent paintings and cloth several paths, some continuing their implicit pictorial tendencies, but others basically new, especially regarding the apprehension of time and duration. In the graphics of the previous works there is an impressive apprehension of temporal rhythms, through their vertiginous capacity for instant design. In Granato's current painting there is an emphasis of the duration by the use of numerous layers of paint, constituting in some cases a kind of non-figurative palimpsest. In some of the recent paintings of Granato spontaneously constitute unconscious sketches of figurines, vividly kinesthetic. This kinesthetic element and the rhythms of the colorful lines of his abstract graphics express the rhythm of his time, which, in the previous phases of his work, had already played an important function, in a different way. The synthesis of the aspects of flow and duration of time constitutes the most interesting contribution of the current phase of Granato's painting, which asserts itself as one of the most significant Brazilian painters of our time."
